Free, and nearly free, outdoor activities in and around Macreddin Village

We have lined up a series of free, and low cost, pursuits and fun activities for all our residents, whether you’re on your own, with your partner or family, or in a group. Anyone wishing to make a day of it, can bring along one of our Macreddin Village Picnics, which we are delighted to prepare for you, with a little notice.

Adventure Activities

These great fun activities can be done against the clock or at your own leisure. Explanation sheets and the necessary materials are available at Reception: Cost: Free

Compass/Orienteering Challenge:

Using the compass provided you must navigate around the grounds of the Hotel to locate eight red orienteering Punches. On locating each Punch use it to mark a box. Each Punch has a unique pattern/stamp, so cheating is out!!

Recommended Time: 30 Mins Difficulty Rating: Medium

Picture Perfect Challenge:

This is a Treasure Hunt with a twist – Using your mobile phone or camera, capture as many images which appear on the displayed sheets below. There are 39 images in total to locate.

Recommended Time: 60 Mins. Difficulty Rating: High

On Yer Bike:

Go Green and cycle along one of our trails. Bikes and Helmets and maps are available from reception. (Adult Bike sizes only)

Walks (or Runs!)

Macreddin Walks:

We have four recommended walks, and a detailed sheet is available at Reception. Routes are as follows: Cost: Free

The Village Amble:

A gentle walk in the immediate Macreddin area taking in the village, golf course and Macreddin Brook.

Approximate Walking Times: Leisurely: 40 Mins. Fitness: 30 Mins

The Macreddin Triangle:

A stroll on country roads through the valley, with the odd sharpish incline, and great views of the surrounding mountains.

Approximate Walking Times: Leisurely: 70 Mins. Fitness: 50 Mins

The Sean Linehan Walk:

A decent walk down through the woods to the beautiful Sean Linehan Walk along Macreddin Brook. Don’t wear your best shoes!

Approximate Walking Times: Leisurely: 80 Mins. Fitness: 60 Mins

To The Top of Cushbawn:

Only for the experienced and energetic, but the incredible views are worth it. Bring water and your mobile phone.

Approximate Walking Time: 2 – 3 Hours

Other Activities in the Macreddin Village Area

The Macreddin Fitness Circuit:

Reception will give you a detailed map of destinations to stop at, and carry out one of the various exercises e.g. Squats, Lunges etc. You can then run/jog to the next destination and carry out the next exercise required. This is categorised to suit all fitness levels.

Recommended Duration: 30 Mins. Cost: Free

Golf:

Play 9 or 18 holes on Macreddin Golf Course, described by Golf World Magazine as "Outstanding and Truly Spectacular”. Designed by Irish Ryder Cup Hero Paul McGinley, the course utilises 160 acres and incorporates all the natural elements of the landscape, including statuesque pines, well protected greens, elevated landing areas and a free flowing brook.

Horse Riding:

We offer delightful trekking and cross-country rides through Macreddin Woods and Wicklow countryside surrounding the village. Both beginners and experienced riders can avail of the Equestrian Centre at Macreddin Village where trail riding can be arranged.

Cost: 1 ½ hour Treks range from €30 - €35.

There is a great variety of stunning heritage sites and visitor attractions within a 30 minute drive, including Glendalough, The Wicklow Mountains National Park, Avondale House and Forest Park, Avoca Handweavers and The Meeting of the Waters. A detailed list with a map is available at Reception.

Get Driven:

If you feel like kicking back and letting someone else do the hard work, we have negotiated the following rates with Aughrim Cabs, who are based just 3 kms from Macreddin.

½ day (approx 4 hours) cab hire:

  • 6 seater - €150
  • 14 seater - €200
  • 29 seater - €250

6 seater to Glendalough - €30 each way.

Pick up from nearest point on Wicklow Way (4 - 6 Pax) - €20.

Greenan Maze, Farm & Museum:

Only 8km from Aughrim, spend an enjoyable day in Greenan Farm with fun for all the family. The Solstice Maze is a relaxing, contemplative pathway for adults and toddlers, set within a large stone circle, day passes include this Tricky Celtic Maze, a range of various museums to visit and a wild nature walk alongside the animals. Fishing:

The National Disabled Angling Facility in Aughrim (3km from the hotel), is available to both able bodied and special needs visitors, and has offered our guest’s great fishing rates, and they will also supply all the equipment you will require at a small charge. Tel: 0402 36552
