Certified by the Organic Trust, Macreddin Village is otherwise known as The Food Village and is an Organic Oasis renowned for its commitment to Wild Foods. Home to Ireland’s first certified Organic Restaurant – The Strawberry Tree, which boasts a daily changing menu that reflects the seasons and features the freshest organic and wild foods, many grown to order on nearby organic farms, or foraged by The Strawberry Tree Brigade on the lanes and in the fields and woods surrounding Macreddin Village.
Organically Certified means yes to natural ingredients, healthy soil, genetic diversity, natural landscape and habitats. Organically certified means no to harmful pesticides, herbicides, GMO’s, irradiation, fumigation, synthetic additives and artificial chemical fertilisers. Food with traceability, sustainability, zero tolerance of chemicals, good animal husbandry and naturally grown are the foundation of The Strawberry Tree’s Organic Licence.
The person behind this food philosophy is Evan Doyle. Evan is a member of Euro-Toques and is strongly connected with the Slow Food Movement in Ireland and The Taste Council of Ireland. With a passion for Wild & Organic foods that has stemmed from his teenage years; Evan first opened The Strawberry Tree Restaurant in Killarney in 1988 where his menus paid homage to the ‘Story behind the Food’. With the opening of The BrookLodge Hotel in 1999, The Strawberry Tree followed Evan to County Wicklow, where its daily menus are still showcasing the freshest Wild & Organic foods, paying tribute to the all-important local suppliers, farmers and producers.
