Wicklow Gaol
Wicklow Gaol is one of Ireland’s top tourist destinations, offering a fascinating glimpse of life in prisons of the past via an interactive tour led by experienced and passionate actor guides. Prisoners were held at Wicklow Gaol during the 1798 Rebellion and the Great Famine. When the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War broke out, the jail was closed down and reopened in 1900 to house republican prisoners. The last inmates were released in 1924. Wicklow Gael reopened as a museum in 1998 and it is said to be one of the world’s most haunted buildings, due to the severe pain that has historically accompanied it.
