La Taverna Armento
Together is better: savour our authentic southern Italian cuisine and conviviality
The tiny ancient village of Armento is perched high on a hilltop in the Italian province of Basilicata. For centuries, its villagers have created superbly flavoursome cuisine using natural, local ingredients.
Over a decade ago, Michele Canosa from Armento married Deirdre Doyle, a native of Aughrim just 3km from BrookLodge & Macreddin Village. Another lasting relationship was established when we met the couple and Michele told us about his home village’s commitment to organic food. Before long, Armento in the heart of Italy was supplying ingredients to an authentic taverna in the heart of Wicklow…
More than just a name
La Taverna Armento’s connection with the village that inspired its name is stronger than ever.
It provides all the organic olive oil, organic balsamic vinegar, organic coffee and many other ingredients that make La Taverna Armento’s cuisine so special. It also supplies inspiration since many of our chefs have travelled to Armento. There, they learn the secrets of authentic southern Italian dishes just as generations of locals have done.
Beyond its food, La Taverna Armento captures the true Italian spirit of togetherness and joy in the simple things. Formality is replaced by superlative Italian food and wine, best enjoyed with good company, laughter and non-stop talk.
Momma knows best!
The original Armento has just one bar – and it’s run by our friend Michele’s mother. This inspired ‘Momma’s Table’, a fantastic chance for everyone to share antipasti and different platters, blending authentic flavours and textures to create a wonderfully communal eating experience.
