As we reflect on Viktor Verbruggen’s remarkable journey, we can’t help but feel a sense of pride and joy. Viktor has been visiting Ireland for over five decades, and for the past 12 years, Viktor has graced our doorstep, bringing with him a spirit of adventure, a love for Ireland, and a warmth that brightens our days
This year marks a milestone—a celebration of 50 years since Viktor first set foot in Ireland from his home in Belgium. What began as a journey of exploration has blossomed into a lifelong love affair with the Emerald Isle. And for the past 12 years, we’ve had the honour of welcoming Viktor to BrookLodge & Macreddin Village.
But Viktor’s story isn’t just about travel; it’s a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring bonds that tie us together. In 2004, Viktor and his beloved wife, Frieda, received a letter from none other than An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and TD John O’Donoghue, congratulating them on 30 years of visiting Ireland. Together, they explored the length and breadth of this beautiful country, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Tragically, Frieda passed away in 2016, leaving Viktor devastated. Yet, fueled by sheer determination and the support of our team here at BrookLodge & Macreddin Village, Viktor ensured that Frieda’s final wishes were honoured. In 2018, amidst the challenges of the Beast from the East, he organised Frieda’s funeral in our onsite chapel, followed by her burial in the tranquil surroundings of Macreddin Village graveyard.
We are so privileged to have Viktor stay with us 3 to 4 times a year, each time we are reminded of the profound impact one man can have on those around him. His infectious spirit, coupled with his genuine appreciation for Ireland, has endeared him to both our crew and our guests alike.
As he revels in the media coverage and the well-deserved accolades, we can’t help but join him in celebrating this momentous occasion with a Midleton whiskey in hand—one of his favourite indulgences. His journey chronicled in the Irish Independent and echoed on the airwaves of Today FM, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Ireland and the indomitable spirit of one remarkable individual.
As we raise a glass to Viktor’s 50 years of Irish adventures, we do so with gratitude, admiration, and a profound sense of privilege. Viktor is not just a guest, but a cherished friend—a true ambassador for Ireland, whose journey reminds us of the power of love, resilience, and the enduring magic of BrookLodge & Macreddin Village.
Cheers to you, Viktor, and to many more years of shared memories and cherished moments. Sláinte!
